Controls decide whether it saves or wastes

A recirculation pump running continuously keeps a pipe loop hot twenty-four hours a day, which saves water but adds standby heat loss and pump runtime. That trade is worth understanding before you install one.

  • Continuous: instant hot water always, highest energy use. Rarely the right choice for a home.
  • Timer: runs during your morning and evening windows only. Simple, effective, and what most Denver households end up on.
  • Aquastat plus timer: runs only when loop temperature drops during scheduled windows. Better again.
  • On-demand button or motion sensor: the pump runs only when someone is about to use the fixture. Lowest energy use, small wait of 15–30 seconds. Our usual recommendation for retrofits.
