If your home has a pressure-reducing valve or backflow preventer, your plumbing is a closed system — and heated water has nowhere to go without one of these.

Water expands when it is heated — roughly 2 percent by volume going from 50°F to 120°F. In a 50-gallon tank that is about a gallon of extra volume with nowhere to put it.
In an open system, that gallon simply pushes back into the city main. But most Denver homes are not open systems. A pressure-reducing valve or a backflow preventer on the service line acts as a one-way door: water comes in, nothing goes back. Every time the burner or element fires, pressure inside your plumbing spikes — frequently past 150 psi — and the only relief is the T&P valve on the heater.
That is why relief valves drip, why supply connectors burst, why faucet cartridges fail early, and why some tanks develop seam leaks years before they should.
How to tell if you need one

Doing it correctly, which is rarer than it should be
An expansion tank is not a fit-and-forget part. It has an air charge behind a rubber bladder, and that charge has to match your home's static water pressure. Out of the box it is typically pre-charged to 40 psi. If your home runs at 70 psi and the tank is installed at 40, the bladder is compressed flat on day one and the tank provides essentially no expansion volume — which is why so many homes have an expansion tank and still drip at the relief valve.
Gauge the static pressure
Measured at a hose bibb with no water running. This number determines everything.
Recommend a PRV if pressure is over 80 psi
Code requires one, and an expansion tank alone will not solve pressure that high.
Charge the tank to match
Air charge set with a gauge and pump to the measured static pressure, with the tank isolated and empty of water.
Install on the cold supply
Between the shutoff and the heater inlet, supported by a strap or bracket — never hanging on the pipe alone, which stresses the joint.
Verify under load
We run a full heating cycle and watch the pressure to confirm the relief valve stays dry.

Quick test for a failed expansion tank
Tap the tank near the top and again near the bottom. A healthy tank sounds hollow above and solid below. If it sounds full all the way, or the whole thing is heavy, the bladder has failed. Alternatively, press the Schrader valve at the end with a small screwdriver: air should come out. If water comes out, the tank is finished and needs replacing.
